This old raw tuocha is a premium Xiaguan Factory production, belonging to the 'Nan Zhao' (南诏) series, which is named after the ancient Nan Zhao Kingdom of Yunnan. Thanks to careful ageing, it has transitioned from a young tea into a complex aged raw pu erh, offering exceptional value. It definitely entered its optimal drinking period.

The not so smoky Xiaguan tuocha

The tightly compressed tuocha features visible golden tips and leaves darkened through many years of ageing. The classic Xiaguan smoky note has softened, now presenting as a rich honey and fruit aroma. In fact, the smokiness is much more subtle compared to other Xiaguan tuocha of the same age. The brewed tea has a bright, orange-gold liquor. The palate is full-bodied and mellow, with a sweet lingering aftertaste.

The packaging also stands out with the unconventional box, which has a hexagonal shape.

Nan Zhao series

Nan Zhao refers to the ancient kingdom (738-902 AD) in Yunnan, centred on the Dali area. Naming this tuocha after this significant reign suggests a tea with enduring character and ancient charm. This series became quite popular, and Xiaguan produced several other products with this name, such as the younger 2017 Nan Zhao raw tuocha and the 2017 Nan Zhao ripe tuocha.
