How to Steep

How to prepare these Chinese teas?

If you are new to loose-leaf tea, we suggest you start with the normal steeping method. You don’t need a lot of equipment, just a mug and a strainer. For preparing tea with the traditional method, or gongfu cha, you will need a small teapot or a gaiwan (lidded bowl).

Classic, normal method

  • Tie Guan Yin: 3 grams of tea; 500ml of boiling water (100°C). Steep for 1 minute. For the 2nd steep: 4 minutes
  • Zhongcha 7581 ripe pu erh: 3 grams of tea; 500 ml of boiling water (100°C). Steep for 2-3 minutes. For the next resteeps, add 1 minute to each subsequent infusion.
  • Lapsang Souchong: 3 grams of tea; 500 ml of water at 85°C. Steep for 40 seconds. For the 2nd steep: 1 minute
  • Moon Garden: 3 grams of tea; 500 ml of almost boiling water (95ºC). Steep for 2 minutes. For the 2nd steep: 3 minutes
  • Jasmine Dragon Pearls: 3 grams of tea; 500 ml of water at 85°C. Steep for 1 minute. For the 2nd steep: 1.5 minute

Traditional/Gongfu method

  • Tie Guan Yin: 5 grams of tea; 100ml of boiling water (100°C). Steep for 30 seconds. For the 2nd steep: 15 seconds. For the next steeps, increase by 5 seconds each time.
  • Zhongcha 7581 ripe pu erh: 5 grams of tea; 100 ml of boiling water (100°C). Steep for 15 seconds. Reduce the steeping time to 5 seconds for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th steeps. Add 5 seconds for each next infusion.
  • Lapsang Souchong: 5 grams of tea; 100 ml of water at 85°C. Steep for 5 seconds. For the next steeps, increase by 5 seconds each time.
  • Moon Garden: 3 grams of tea; 100 ml of almost boiling water (95ºC). Steep for 10 seconds in 100ml water for the first 5 steeps, then gradually increase the steeping time.
  • Jasmine Dragon Pearls: 5 grams of tea; 100 ml of water at 85°C. For the 1st and 2nd steep: 30 seconds. Increase the steeping time by 10 seconds for every next steep

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.

When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.

Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
