This handmade teapot is a refined piece of art crafted by Yuhua Bao, a Yixing artist of the highest degree. It's decorated with delicate motifs of tree branches and blooming flowers on the lid and around the body, bottom, and even the inside of the pot. The teapot features the Chinese characters 暗香 (An Xiang), meaning “subtle fragrance”. Content:

  • Teapot in gift box
  • Artist certificate of authenticity
  • Booklet containing artist introduction, resume, and a catalogue of other teapots by the artist. The booklet is written in Chinese.

Design inspiration: bamboo hat

This teapot features a flat and round shape with delicately curved spout. The handle is stable, comfortable to hold, and easy to control. The density of the lid is well arranged, which contrasts with the delicate and smooth knob. From the body to the knob, and then to the lid, the three points are in a straight line, and the proportions are very harmonious, like a bamboo hat.

Duan Ni Clay

Made from Duan Ni clay, it features a dark yellow color with natural black and brown speckles. Each teapot carries its own one-of-a-kind pattern, making no two pieces exactly alike.

The built-in 9-hole filter and short spout ensure smooth, fast pouring with no spills. The flat and large body allows tea leaves to fully unfurl, making it especially ideal for brewing teas with large, whole leaves.

Woodfiring in a Traditional Dragon Kiln

This teapot was wood-fired in a traditional dragon kiln, for a finish which is rich in natural variation and warmth. These kilns, built on sloped hillsides with a snake-like shape, can reach very high temperatures and fire thousands of ceramics at once. This centuries-old method imparts a character and texture that cannot be replicated by modern kilns. If you're curious, read the article China's Dragon Kiln: Meaning & History.

The Artist

Yuhua Bao, born in May 1965 in Yixing City, is a fifth-generation ceramic artist from the renowned "Bao Shengtai" legacy. Growing up surrounded by purple clay culture, she studied under Li Bifang and later joined the Painted Pottery Factory, training with master Qiu Yulin. After graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1993, she became a “National Assistant Craft Artist” in 1996 and earned the prestigious title of “National Craft Artist” in 2012. Her teapot creations showcase a unique artistic character, blending tradition with art.
