The perfect ripe pu erh tea for Xiao Qing Gan
In 2018, Xiao Qing Gan tea became so popular that sourcing quality ones was nearly impossible. As demand skyrocketed, Chinese tea brands scrambled to offer this unique tea. Instead of sourcing this tea, we decided to embarked on our own journey to produce the perfect Xiao Qing Gan from scratch.
After sampling and tasting various Xiao Qing Gan teas in 2018, we found many lacking complexity as well as balance between tangerine aroma and ripe pu erh tea. Some had an overwhelming citrus scent, while others were too earthy in flavour.
We concluded that the ideal ripe pu erh tea for Xiao Qing Gan should be a blend of smaller and younger leaves, with less intensive post-fermentation. This produced a more complex, balanced, and less earthy tea. Additionally, by applying our knowledge of jasmine tea production, we refined the processing method for ripe pu erh tea to enhance the absorption of the citrus aroma.
In summer 2018, fresh green tangerines from the Xinhui region of Guangdong were harvested. These tangerines were cleaned, hollowed out, and filled them with our own ripe pu erh tea. They were then naturally sun-dried, wrapped in paper, and stored for further aging and aroma absorption.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.
When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.
Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
