A raw pu erh tea cake from the Haiwan Tea Company. This Lao Tong Zhi (Old Comrade) pu erh is based on the classic 9948 recipe first launched in 2008.
Heritage: 9948 Recipe by Zou Bingliang
Crafted under the supervision of pu erh master Zou Bingliang, this 9948 raw pu erh tea cake pays tribute to both tea tradition and legacy. The 9948 series name commemorates Haiwan Tea Company's 1999 founding ("99") and it’s an improved version of the classic ‘75’ series formula to suit modern tastes. Designed as an accessible daily drinker, this 100g cake delivers consistent quality at an approachable price point, serving as a benchmark entry-level tea for newcomers while remaining a reliable staple for experienced drinkers.
Flavor & Craftsmanship
Using Yunnan large-leaf tea, the 9948 raw pu erh tea cake achieves a perfect balance of classic richness and modern cleanliness. The aroma features high floral notes and sweet honey notes, with a distinctive wild, earthy character of Menghai tea. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and mellow, accompanied by a pronounced lingering sweetness (hui gan). As expected from young arbor tea, there is a slight astringency, but it dissipates quickly, transforming into sweetness. Its approachable profile is characterized by low bitterness, clean finish, and enduring aftertaste.
Value & Versatility
Priced affordably, the 9948 excels as a high-value daily tea suitable for both home and office enjoyment. While not marketed as a collector's tea, its aging potential offers pleasant surprises for budget-conscious enthusiasts.
