Jiaogulan, also known as Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, is an excellent caffeine-free alternative to regular tea. The tea liquor and texture resembles that of a light oolong, while the taste offers a wonderful complexity of seaweed and liquorice wood. The after taste is sweet with hints of apple.

Jiaogulan is a plant native to China, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. It's often referred to as "Southern Ginseng," it has been widely used in traditional medicine as an adaptogenic herb, akin to ginseng. Because it's more affordable then ginseng it's also known as a 'poor man's ginseng'. The plant is recognized for its potential health benefits, such as enhancing stamina, reducing fatigue, and improving cardiovascular health. Moreover, it has been linked with boosting the immune system, regulating blood pressure, and balancing cholesterol levels.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.

When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.

Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
