Design

The delicate and intricate design on this tea set is what makes it so special. One can see a rooster and a hen as the main subject within a garden landscape, surrounded by chicks, flowers and trees. The whole scene is painted in vibrant and vivid colors, exuding a sense of elegance and beauty.

Historical Background of the Chicken Cup

This tea set is inspired by the original Chenghua Chicken Cup, which is a porcelain artifact from the Ming Dynasty. The cup was created during the reign of Emperor Chenghua, who ruled from 1464 to 1487. According to experts, the Chenghua Chicken Cup is a symbol of prosperity, good luck, and fertility. The cup's depiction of the rooster and hen symbolizes a harmonious relationship and blessings of numerous children, something highly valued in Chinese culture. In 2014, during a Sotheby's auction, a chicken cup was sold to Chinese billionair Liu Yiqian for 36 million USD.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.

When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.

Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
