'Hundred Flowers' Chanding Tenmoku Tea Cup

A traditional Song Dynasty Tenmoku tea cup (or 'Jian Zhan' cup) with a beautiful 'Hundred Flowers' glaze as a result oven-firing at 1300ºC.

Chanding shape

The 'Chanding' shape, also known as the 'zen meditation' shape, is highly regarded by Chinese monks and individuals who practice meditation. Its design includes an inward-facing rim, as well as a 'belly' reminiscent of a buddha's belly.

The other reason why the name of the shape is related to meditation, is because there's only way to hold it conveniently in your hand: Hold the tea cup slightly beneath its widest point using the thumb and index finger, while balancing it with the pinky finger. This relates to the principles of the way of life and equilibrium, which are highly regarded values in religion.
