A pu erh tea consisting of thick tea leaves with visible downy buds harvested from ancient trees in Ba Nuo, Mengku.

The tea leaves are handpicked in Spring 2022, and processed into maocha (loose tea). Afterwards it was aged for 7 months in loose-form, until we steamed and stone-pressed them into cakes in November 2022. The cakes are double-wrapped in two layers of paper for optimal further aging.

Honey-Sweet & Floral Aroma

The taste is honey-sweet with a complex flowery bouquet of lily, chrysanthemum and jasmine. The golden yellow tea soup has a thick and oily appearance, offering a smooth, creamy, and full mouthfeel. The lingering after taste is sweet and refreshing with hints of mint. This tea will also leave its aroma on the bottom of your cup or the lid of your gaiwan.

Enjoy this beautiful raw pu erh tea now, or even better, let it age and invest in your future 'Tea Happiness'.

Ba Nuo Village

While most pu erh teas made from a blend of leaves from different regions, this is a 'Single Origin' tea cake. In fact, it’s a 'Single Village', 'Single Garden' tea. The tea leaves of this exquisite cake are harvested from ancient tea trees surrounding Ba Nuo. The village is located in the Mengku tea region at 1840m altitude and about 10km away from the famous Bing Dao village.

Stone-pressed

Instead of compact machine compression, this tea cake is loosely stone-pressed. This results in minimal damage to the tea leaves and allows the cake to age faster and age more uniformly. A loosely pressed tea cake is also easier to pry relative to very tightly compressed cakes.

Double-wrapped

While regular pu erh is packed in a single wrapper, our tea cake is double wrapped. The outside paper wrapper is extra thick to protect the cake against excessive humidity and unpleasant odours, while the inner wrapper will further help regulate humidity and allow the cake to breath and optimally age. When you order 5 cakes it will be shipped as 1 tong (wrapped in bamboo leaves).

Cha Qi

Our Ba Nuo ancient tea also offers incredible tea energy (cha qi). Take your time to enjoy this tea, and it may warm your body and elevate your mind into a state of zen.

How to Steep

6 Grams, 15 steeps

With 6 grams of tea per session, you’ll be able to get 15 steeps in a 150ml gaiwan, and enjoy over 2 litres of tea.

Steeping Instructions

This is a very forgiving raw pu erh tea, when it comes to the steeping temperature. It will taste great when steeped anywhere between 85 to 100ºC (185 - 212ºF). At lower temperatures, you’ll enjoy a softer and more creamy taste and notice the subtle nuances in the honey and flowery aroma. At higher temperatures, the taste will be more robust and the texture will be thicker.

For your first session we recommend you to steep 6 grams of tea leaves at 95ºC (200ºF), with the following steeping times:

  • 1-4th steep: 10 seconds
  • 5-6th steep: 15 seconds
  • 7-8th steep: 20 seconds
  • 9-10th steep: 30 seconds
  • 11-12th steep: 40 seconds
  • 13-15th steep: 60 seconds

After your first session, you may experiment with different temperatures and steeping times as according to personal taste.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.

When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.

Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
