About Anhua Dark Tea
Anhua Dark Tea is a type of post-fermented dark tea produced in Anhua County and Xinhua County in Hunan Province, China. It is an ancient tea that has been consumed since the 16th century and has gained a reputation for its fine quality and smooth taste.
The tea plants used to make Anhua Dark Tea are middle-sized bushes grown around Anhua County. During the processing of the tea, it is roasted over pinewood, giving it its unique character. This process also gives the leaves a smoky aroma and taste. Different ways of processing, compression, and wrapping results in a variety of dark teas.
The best way to store this tea for ageing is in an environment that is clean and odour-free, without direct contact to sunlight.
Hei Cha can be prepared using either gongfu-style or can simply be left to brew in a pot with approximately 3-5 grams of the leaves per session. Anhua Dark Tea has calming and regulating effects on the digestive system that result in an overall feeling of well-being.
The taste of Anhua Dark Tea is something truly extraordinary. You’ll notice rich, earthy notes of wood and herbs shine through with a beautiful complexity, intertwining with each other to create a singularly unique experience that is both soothing and invigorating. There’s also a hint of smokiness in some Hei Cha, which adds complexity and depth to this intriguing category of teas. The finish is always smooth yet lasting, leaving your palate with an unforgettable impression that will make you crave for more.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.
When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.
Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
