2016 Haiwan Old Comrade Winter Snow (Dong Xue)
2016 Haiwan Old Comrade Winter Snow (Dong Xue)
In 2016, the Haiwan tea factory launched the Four Seasons tea cake series as part of their Old Comrade brand. These cakes are in high demand due to the limited production since the initial release.
Dong Xue / Winter Snow
This Dong Xue (Winter Snow) cake is part of the Four Season series and is specifically designed for the Winter season. According to Haiwan, this tea has the ability to warm the body and heart, making it the perfect drink for a cold and snowy day.
Ge Lang He
This large ripe pu erh tea (400g) is made from tea leaves of the Ge Lang He tea region. It offers everything you expect from a premium pu erh. It's not excessively fermented and not aggressively thick or earthy. Instead, it presents the classic aroma of a ripe pu erh in a subtle and elegant way, leaving a trail of sweetness in the mouth.
The cake is medium tightly compressed, but we recommend using a tea knife to pry.
Haiwan's Winter Poem
The label inside the cake offers a beautiful explanation of the philosophy behind this cake. Here's the original + our translation.
终南阴岭秀,积雪浮云端。
林表明霁色,城中增暮寒。
远离喧嚣,大山为伴。
干秘林幽谷中,甄选哈尼茶乡。
The southern mountains are beautiful and the snow is floating in the clouds.
The forest shows its bright colour, and the city becomes colder at dusk.
Away from the hustle and bustle, accompanied by large mountains.
In dense forest of the deep valley, you find the home of the Hani people.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.
When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.
Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
