A 2014 raw pu erh tea made from ancient tree tea leaves of the famous Mahei village in Yunnan.

Mahei, Yiwu's Benchmark

As one of the oldest villages in the Yiwu region, Mahei (麻黑) Village boasts a legendary reputation for its tea. Considered “Yiwu Zhengshan” (易武正山), it hails from the core mountain area of Yiwu, covering a vast, pristine expanse of 2.74 square kilometers with an altitude of 1,203 meters. Here resides a community of just 123 farmers, for whom tea is the primary source of income.

The local tea-making culture has a rich history, influenced by the Han ethnicity that migrated from Shiping (石屏) and Jiangxi (江西). They have honed their excellent hand-made tea craftsmanship to perfection, which has been passed down from generation to generation. Nestled in an unspoiled, remote environment where pollution is nonexistent, Mahei provides an excellent place for tea trees to flourish. The people here live in harmony with nature, making them renowned for their sustainability practices.

Many hold Mahei tea in high esteem, as it boasts a unique orchid aroma and caramel aroma. It is said that Mahei tea's reputation serves as the benchmark for Yiwu tea.

Our design work is inspired by the artwork “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by the Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Instead of displaying the daily lives of people in the capital of China (as the original artwork), we display the tea making process of farmers through the same bird’s eye perspective.

When examining our packaging design in detail, tea enthusiasts will observe the tea making process, featuring tea farmers picking, drying, rolling, and frying tea leaves. The tea is then tasted in a pavilion and transported by horses along the ‘ancient tea road’.

Together, the traditional Chinese landscape and tea making theme, symbolise heritage, tradition, and respect for hard work of tea farmers.
