Meet Jiang Wei: An Award-Winning Yixing Teapot Artist

Among the Yixing teapots in our collection, a few stand out for their elegant proportions, refined style and well-balanced shapes. Although each follows a different traditional form, they share a clear sense of harmony in their lines, details and overall construction. They were all made by the same award-winning and officially certified Yixing artist: Jiang Wei (蒋伟).

Jiang Wei comes from a family with deep roots in Yixing zisha craftsmanship. His work draws on traditional hand-building techniques while showing a clear personal style. This can be seen in the proportions, lines and details of his teapots.

Jiang Wei’s Curriculum and Artistic Background

Jiang Wei was born into a Yixing zisha family and grew up surrounded by the craft of purple clay teapot making. From an early age, he was influenced by the traditions and techniques of Yixing pottery and developed a strong interest in zisha art.

He showed a natural understanding of teapot design and production, studied the techniques of several established masters, and gradually incorporated these influences into his own work.

He is especially skilled at producing complex and technically difficult forms. His works are known for their original compositions, balanced shapes and flowing lines. They also draw on traditional Chinese culture and have entered the collections of museums and private collectors.

Jiang Wei holds the professional title of National Assistant Arts and Crafts Artist and has also been recognized as an Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Ceramic Artist. He is a member of both the Jiangsu Ceramics Association and the China Arts and Crafts Society.

Awards and Prizes

Jiang Wei has received several gold awards for his ceramic works:

• 2015 – Jisi Teapot (集思壶): Gold Award at the 10th National Ceramic Art Design and Innovation Competition.
• 2017 – Bamboo and Stone (竹石): Gold Award at the 7th China International Culture and Art Industry Expo. 
• 2017 – Square Bamboo Ding Teapot (四方竹鼎): Gold Award at the China Guangzhou International Tea Industry Expo.
• 2020 – Charm of Taihu Stone (太湖石趣): Gold Award at the “Da A Fu Cup” Exhibition and Evaluation of Outstanding Works in Traditional Arts and Crafts.
• 2020 – Dezhong Teapot (德钟): Gold Award at the second “Taocheng Cup” Yixing Ceramic Art Competition. These prizes show the range of his work, from geometric forms to bamboo-inspired and traditional designs.

Small Shuiping Yixing Teapot

The Small Shuiping Yixing Teapot is made from rare red Jiangpo clay and has a capacity of 140 ml. Its classic form, compact size, and balanced proportions make it well suited to gongfu tea sessions. 

Small Qin Quan Yixing Teapot

The Small Qin Quan Yixing Teapot is also handmade from red Jiangpo clay. Its upright form is inspired by ancient Qin dynasty measuring weights, while the engraved calligraphy and floral branches soften the body's geometry with an artistic touch. 

"Noble Bamboo" Hehuan Yixing Teapot

The "Noble Bamboo" Hehuan Yixing Teapot combines the rounded Hehuan form with sculpted bamboo details on the handle and lid knob. Made from the beautiful Benshan green clay, it has a distinguished character and stands out for its color and shape. 

"Words of the Heart" Dezhong Cat Yixing Teapot

The "Words of the Heart" Dezhong Cat Yixing Teapot is made from yellow Duanni clay and follows the traditional Dezhong form, with a rounded body, defined shoulders, and a straight spout. The long-haired cat is engraved on its side, making this precious teapot a treasure for cat lovers.

Jiang Wei’s teapots reflect a careful balance between established Yixing traditions and personal expression. From the simple lines of the Shuiping to the sculpted bamboo details of the Hehuan and the playful engraving of the Dezhong Cat, each piece reveals a different side of his work.
